The legend of Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) is based on Charles Perrault classic fairy tale first published in 1697: La Belle au Bois dormant. Many people mistakenly believe Walt Disneys animated classic Sleeping Beauty was the original story, but it was based on the Brothers Grimm version of the story published in 1812, as was the story this painting depicts. Beauty is seen here in her one hundred year sleep, encircled by a motif of rose briars.
