This artwork is from the personal collection of Dianne Borsini-Burr.
This piece evolved out of four studies that I did based on the young Navajo sheepherder in the Monument Valley area. I was interested in conveying an image that would talk to the feeling that the Monument Valley gives. As I imagined what it would be like if one of the girls was standing on the edge of one of the plateaus I was taken by the two worlds that exist there. The Earth and the sky. As my studies evolved further, the clothing that is indicative of the Navajo People became less important. The feeling of the place between Spirit and Earth came through in this simplified form.
John Coleman (b. 1949) emerged as a significant force in American sculpture after beginning his formal studies at the Art Center for Design in Los Angeles. His exceptional talent earned him membership in the prestigious National Sculpture Society of New York in 1999, marking the beginning of a remarkable professional ascent.
Coleman’s masterful exploration of Western themes culminated in his invitation to join the renowned Cowboy Artists of America in 2001, cementing his position among the nation’s foremost sculptors. His prolific creative process, maintaining multiple works-in-progress simultaneously, allows him to consistently contribute fresh perspectives to the contemporary Western art dialogue through several new editions each year.
“Art is putting a spiritual face on a historical idea. It has to be a metaphor, so that the viewer can understand it. It has to be the viewer’s story, not yours.” –John Coleman
