The bath is a subject that has been painted often in the past few hundred years and will continue to hold fascination for artists in the future. This imagery harks back to the Orientalists who were painting in North Africa in the mid- nineteenth century, a favorite location of mine, as I can see North Africa from my studio window across the Mediterranean. In this version, I have created a guardian holding a spear to protect her young mistress. Yet she also holds a cloth to protect this intimate moment as her mistress begins to bathe. But because I am the artist, I have chosen to show the mistress just before she is covered! The young woman is oblivious to her surroundings. She is in her own world of of reflection, innocence, and repose.
