In Summer & Winter, Michael Parkes crafts a visual fable of contrast and union, where whimsy meets the weight of duality. Perched delicately atop a brooding figure, the radiant muse—part goddess, part dream—rests in languid contemplation, her hair aflame with summer’s fullness. The cool, masked sentinel below anchors the composition with winter’s silent watchfulness. Between them, symbolic creatures—a frog, a magpie, blooming lilies—conjure themes of transformation and longing. With his signature surreal elegance, Parkes invites us to ponder the interplay of season, self, and shadow in this captivating dance of opposites. A piece that both charms and challenges, it lingers in the imagination like a riddle from another world.
